Hello,
I thought I'd post this because it is my very first effort at texturizing float glass. The bubble was a nice mistake... haven't decided on a use for it as of yet. So, for now, it makes for an interesting table.

Hi Christopher,

Perhaps, off-hand glass usually refers to a studio glass shop that is a "glass blowing studio".. and this type of glass working requires perhaps more of a commitment as to infrastructure and costs...

Another popular type of 3 dim. glass is lamp/Torch work. You could strive to be another
Paul Stankard or
Robert Mickelsen
for instance.

As for off-hand glass, you could aspire to be another:
Lino Tagliapietra or my local favorite:

Richard Jones

Good luck!

Thank you for your reply.
I am not too familiar with the terms, but off-hand glass sculpture sounds like what I may be looking for.
Is that the term I should use when inquiring about the instruction classes?
Again, my thanks,
CWB

Hi CWB,

there are many types of 3 dimensional glass, so you will have to decide your next course of action. The sky is the limit here... from off-hand hot glass sculpture, to molds in a kiln, to sandblasting a thick piece of glass, to flame working and more.

In any way you go, you may benefit from starting with some courses in any of these areas, if you can find them. This way you don't commit to infrastructure on any specific discipline (which can get expensive). Your experience with any of these areas will help a little eventually in which ever direction you take with glass.

I am just a hobbyist, but that is my suggestion anyway.

I am new to this aspect of the glass world, as I have been involved in stained glass for some years. I find that my needs have changed and would like to incorporate three dimensional works into my next piece.
Having used the various build-up methods in prior pieces I would like to do away with that look and try what I can best describe as sculpting some of the glass to create the third dimension.

I hope this is not too far out of a description of what I want to accomplish.
Please advice as to what you would suggest be my course of action.

Donovan, let me know if you would like to talk about this on your board. I would be happy to explain my motvations. I mean, if you're aware of it.

..."O.K., please add air into the cylindrical pipe"... just takes too long to say... in the "heat" of the moment that is.

You're right of course. And besides nobody needed to be reminded once again of the homoerotic language of the hotshop. Its kind of creepy. I think I might rename all my questionable tools and phrases. So like, tomorow I'll go in and tell my assistant (the wife) to 'nib-off the gizzle-wizzle. Then place the armature within the inferno.'
