Hello, I moved this to the classifieds since it was more of a service offering. The equipment building is more of an exchange of information on how to build equipment. Kevin, feel free to post pics of your bench here. I think that would help you in drawing some business. Donovan |

| I am a fabricator in Troy Ohio. I have a coworker that had me make him a very nice gaffers bench a few weeks back. It is 1.25" heavy wall sq tube with a sheet steel heat sheild on the right side. 36" wide 28" rail on right 42" rail on left 18"x36" wood seat and 12.5 x 22 right side. All 4 feet adjust for level. He loves it. Looks just like the ones on line selling for $1200. If anyone would like I can make 2 more with the tube and steel I have left. I can sell them for around $500 or make a deal on 2 if you would like for $900. | |||

Hi Philip, to post a .pdf you could look for a free file hosting service... I think google drive has a free offer that might work. So, get your PDF uploaded there, then simply provide the share URL here. Regarding crucible kilns, sure!.. Buy and start working!.. I don't see a reason not to. However, you will likely still have to deal with problems. Wire is barely rated for molten glass temps.. So you will likely have element failures and costs associated with that. Element sets are not cheap. The point where building your own proves worth while is when you run 24 / 7 and make your own elements to deal with inevitable failures. The cost up front is prohibitive / scary to many... Welder, metal tools, spool of wire, time and materials... But the long haul cost is what really matters in a continuous running shop... And you'll very soon save money. So, if you are a weekend warrior.. Go buy a crucible kiln and start making glass. Those crucible kilns dont have a lot of insulation, so they are easy / cheap to start up and shut down. If you'll be working a lot and need uptime for weeks, months continually.. You might want to consider another solution... Don't under estimate.. Running costs! That's my $.02 Good luck. Donovan |

Hi there! I'm considering setting up a small home glass blowing studio, and phase into it by first buying or building a crucible kiln, to be used later as glass furnace but first as glass casting & fusing kiln while I save money for glory hole/annealer & accessories. I did a detailed survey of all commercially available crucible kilns on the market today (Paragon, Jen Ken, Aim, Evenheat, Skutt & Olympic) and for a price of $1,500-$1,700 it seems almost not worth building your own & dealing with all problems / risks, as well as time to invest (which I would rather be spending blowing glass!). I can definitely share the written survey, if someone can provide instructions on how to post files (PDF) to this forum (Donovan?!) My question to the forum: has anybody practical experience with these small crucible kilns? Are they an alternative to building your own investment furnace? Looking forward to hear your feedback & opinions, Thanks, Filip |
